There is something genuinely thrilling about a band that refuses to pick a lane, and Ydos are exactly that kind of band. On "Black Spikes", the Lithuanian quintet take modern progressive metal and drag it through trap beats, rap cadences, orchestral swells and outright blastbeat violence — and somehow it all hangs together. This is their first record for Napalm Records, arriving hot on the heels of a double nomination at the M.A.M.A. Music Awards back home, and you can hear the hunger in every bar.
The album opens with "Pasaka", where an ominous ticking mutates into full orchestration while vocalist Agnis pushes her high register against a wall of unnerving screams. Then "Motina" detonates — a lullaby that turns into growls, thunderous blastbeats and intricately carved guitar riffs, laying out the record's central idea: ten songs, ten human failings, one mirror held up to all of us. "Melas" is the curveball, threading trap and rap into a framework that stays unmistakably metal, while "Mara" plays calm and storm off against each other, giving every element room to breathe without ever loosening the knot. It is ambitious, theatrical and heavy as hell — a band swinging for something bigger than the genre's usual playbook.
