About the album
On their tenth album "Ruby Red", the San Francisco-based quartet Amber Asylum delves deeply into tumultuous times. The four musicians intertwine instrumental passages with evocative lyrics. "Ruby Red" combines lamentations and introspective sorrow with powerful songwriting that generates both despair and hope. The album oscillates between dark themes such as pain, loss, empowerment, and mortality. Amber Asylum crafts intense soundscapes that are both raw and introspective. "Ruby Red" is composed of classical strings, bass, drums and percussion, modular synthesizers, and female vocals. Musically, Amber Asylum balances driving neoclassical elements against the raw power of pounding bass and drums, which create a strong rhythmic impact that contrasts beautifully with the quieter, more contemplative strings on "Ruby Red". Bass and drums provide a constant pulse that forms the foundation of the songs and lends intensity and depth to the dark moments of the album.

About the album
With "A Pathway to the Moon," Unreqvited takes a significant evolutionary leap in their musical journey. Known for their roots in Blackgaze, this project by the enigmatic 鬼 explores dominant lyrical dimensions while retaining its ambient and post-rock influences. The album signifies a shift towards more vocal expression, influenced by Unreqvited’s transition into a live band setting. Composed with future performances in mind, it serves as a Blackgaze soundtrack enriched by the bonus track, a cover of Hans Zimmer's "Cornfield Chase." The album maintains the ethereal passages seen in "Beautiful Ghosts" while incorporating clear vocals that heralded this evolution.
Unreqvited masterfully intertwines elements from their past works, combining massive anthemic choruses reminiscent of "Mosaic I: L'amour et l'ardeur" with simple melancholic melodies from their debut "Disquiet" and the orchestral grandeur of "Empathica." Established by 鬼 in 2016, Unreqvited is described as an ever-evolving entity with vast stylistic breadth. With this album, they not only consolidate previous threads but also venture into new musical territories, crafting a work that bridges traditional rock and metal song structures with the immersive qualities of a soundtrack.

About the album
With their second album released in 1999, "The Point at Which It Falls Apart," Mesh achieved a breakthrough—both critically and artistically as well as commercially. In its 25th anniversary year, Mesh is re-releasing this long out-of-print milestone in an exclusive artbook edition packed with bonus material. The British dark synthpop band was founded in 1991 when singer and guitarist Mark Hockings and keyboardist and singer Richard Silverthorn discovered musical commonalities at a concert that led to the formation of Mesh. This artistic partnership has since defined the legacy of Mesh. The creative synergy of Mesh has always stemmed from a strong complementary division of roles: Richard Silverthorn composes the music, while Mark Hockings writes stirring and profound lyrics that infuse emotional depth into the soundscapes.
Mesh's musical journey began with the release of the "Fragile" EP in 1994 and their debut album "In This Place Forever" in 1996. Their major release "Who Watches Over Me" in 2002 propelled Mesh back into the spotlight, marking another peak in their illustrious career. A wave of popularity across Europe, especially in Germany, elevated the British band on festival lineups. "Automation Baby" (2013) reached number 33 on the German album charts and dominated alternative charts across Europe. With "Looking Skyward" (2016), Mesh climbed even higher to reach number 12 on the German charts. Currently, Mark Hockings and Richard Silverthorn are working on the next Mesh studio album. To bridge the gap for their long-time but also newer fans, the duo is making their long-out-of-stock and highly sought-after second album "The Point at Which It Falls Apart" available again in a carefully remastered version.

About the album
APTORIAN DEMON hail from Trondheim, Norway. They were founded by vocalist, guitarist and sole member Storhetsvanviddets Mester, who has also been known as Ghâsh. APTORIAN DEMON embody black metal in its original bleak and raw form. Their mastermind is neither apologetic about this, nor about the hateful, misanthropic, and satanic content. This is what black metal is about. Storhetsvanviddets Mester is a lone wolf, who does not want to be associated with previous bands or the Nidrosian scene. APTORIAN DEMON have previously released the EP "Angst, jammer og fortvilelse" in 2005 and the debut album "Libertus" (2012), which gained the band a dedicated following in the underground. Naturally, there are no social media outlets. APTORIAN DEMON have deigned the time to be right for their sophomore full-length. Entitled "Liv tar slutt" ('Life Ends'), this album keeps every 'promise' of a strong black metal statement made by the previous releases and will delight dark souls with its cold, harsh, and razor-edged songs. This is Norwegian black metal! Take it or leave it!

NACHTMYSTIUM are back! And after all that was said and done, mastermind Blake Judd is still standing. Not only that, but Judd has also clawed himself back from the abyss of a most extreme life imaginable to a much more quiet, observant, and matured artist and person. His return will not be met with universal applause – even from the black metal scene. For anybody following the tumultuous career of Blake Judd and his pioneering band that has pushed the borders of their genre into new territories, this comes hardly as a surprise. With their ninth studio album "Blight Privilege", NACHTMYSTIUM are once again presenting a masterpiece that can even compete with the trilogy of albums that many view as the peak of the earlier career of the American black metal (USBM) trailblazers: "Instinct: Decay" (2006), "Assassins: Black Meddle Pt. I" (2008), and "Addicts: Black Meddle Pt. II" (2010). Like an infernal sniper, every song on "Blight Privilege" hits straight on target. All the darkest elements, required and longed for, are there: harsh, rasping vocals, the fierce hum and whirr of guitars burning with an ice cold fire, moments of ecstatic and exalted beauty in hellish soundscapes. Yet there are also those fine details that the musically well-versed Judd has always cunningly hidden in the general sonic onslaught such as post-punk and wave elements, and now even a knife-tip of outlaw country. "Blight Privilege" connects NACHTMYSTIUM to its glory-days – not as a nostalgic reminiscence but as a forward-looking continuation and next evolutionary step. If anything, this ninth album is marked by a maturity derived from experience and learning. Judd's often diabolically catchy tunes are sharper than ever and have lost none of their bite. This might be due to the fact that it is the first album of the USBM spearheads which Judd composed in a fully sober state. With "Blight Privilege", NACHTMYSTIUM demand the throne of USBM back. This album clearly has the musical force and lyrical daring to do give credit to this claim. Love it or hate it, NACHTMYSTIUM have set a tall milestone with "Blight Privilege"!

About the album
From the heartlands of Hälsingland emerges the haunting legacy of Hultkläppen, one of Sweden’s most enigmatic and masterful fiddlers. Thomas von Wachenfeldt, a classically trained violinist, composer, and renowned traditional Swedish musician, has ventured into the depths of history to resurrect timeless tunes. “Den Vanfrejdade – Hultkläppens låtar och leverne” is a biographical journey spanning the life and legacy of Hultkläppen (1834-1898). Comprising every known tune attributed to the legendary infamous fiddler, this double-CD album is the culmination of twenty years of meticulous research by Wachenfeldt, who is also a PhD researcher and an Associate Professor at Dalarna University and Uppsala University.
The album is accompanied by a 132-page book, offering an in-depth exploration of Hultkläppen’s life and music. Each track pulses with the spirit of the Nordic wilderness, capturing the essence of traditional Swedish folk fiddle music. From the mournful strains of “När Hultkläppen spelade hustrun till graven” to the jubilant refrains of “Hultkläppens brännvinspolska”, Wachenfeldt’s masterful interpretations breathe life into melodies passed down through generations. The music, steeped in the lore and landscape of Hälsingland, offers a passage through time, evoking the same woodland magic that inspired Hultkläppen himself.

It was well known in Nordic traditions that the voice holds magical power. With their debut album "At the Sound of the Heart", a collective of renowned musicians from the west coast of Norway explores and embodies these ancient ways. All band members brought a part of their own background to WHISPERING VOID: The distinctive voices of WARDRUNA vocalist Lindy-Fay Hella and her male counterpart Kristian "Gaahl" Espedal spellbind the listener with an enormous range of techniques and sounds. Guitarist Ronny Stavestrand and ENSLAVED drummer Iver Sandøy combine ambient, psychedelic prog, and rock with notes of dark folk and metal on "At the Sound of the Heart" into something essentially Nordic but extending beyond already explored dimensions. The creative spark that lit the fire of WHISPERING VOID burning came from a long time of creating new music by Ronny Stavestrand. The guitarist had shared many years in the legendary underground black metal act TRELLDOM with outstanding vocalist Kristian "Gaahl" Espedal, who rose to fame with GORGOROTH and has meanwhile also established GAAHLS WYRD as a channel for his creativity. Therefore, it was only natural that Stavestrand asked Espedal to contribute to WHISPERING VOID – to which the latter chose to agree. While exploring new musical territories together, the need for a female voice arose. Having been part of WARDRUNA in the early years, Espedal was quick to note that vocal powerhouse Lindy-Fay Hella with her characteristic voice and unique contributions, which she has also shared in her own projects, was the perfect match for WHISPERING VOID. Hella was duly invited and luckily heeded the call. The quartet was completed by Iver Sandøy on battery and bass, who had put his impeccable musical sensitivity and timing into the service of ENSLAVED some years back but already made himself a name with the progressive outfit EMMERHOFF & THE MELANCHOLY BABIES. The result of their collective musings and interchanges is a unique mixture of the various influences that the band members represent. There are elements of ambient, dark and Nordic folk, psychedelic prog, rock, and many more ingredients in the unique music created by WHISPERING VOID, which due to lack of an easy description needs to be experienced by each listener individually. There is magic woven into "At the Sound of the Heart"!

Creatures of the night probably miss the 80s of the last century badly. Post-punk and New Wave reached glorious heights and their epic explorations of mixing hard guitars and driving electronics dominated alternative dance floors. Names like SISTERS OF MERCY, FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM, DEPECHE MODE, JOY DIVISION, THE HUMAN LEAGUE, ULTRAVOX and others still have a magic ring to them. Luckily, all that subtle eroticism, the electric excitement, and dark musical pleasure is not gone for good: SOROR DOLOROSA come flying to the rescue on black wings. Their fourth album "Mond" (German for "Moon") has musical fangs that draw delicious sonic blood on the first listening experience. The classic dark post-punk and wave elements are all there, and so is the overwhelming enticement to let your feet move in an ecstatic dance under the eponymous moon. Yet SOROR DOLOROSA are no peddlers of stale snake oil nostalgia. The French band has updated the classic feel with a massive sound fitting for the new millennium. Mix and mastering of "Mond" have been successfully entrusted to PERTURBATOR mastermind James Kent, who has polished this epic album with a lush vibrant power and ethereal coldness. Lyrically, SOROR DOLOROSA remain firmly on the path they have wandered from the start, when the band was originally founded in Toulouse in 2001 and finally emerged with the "Severance" EP in 2009. Their inspiration has again come in part from poets and writers such as William Blake and Edgar Alan Poe. The romantic and cathartic emotional landscapes are still at the heart of the band. With "Mond", SOROR DOLOROSA are reaching far out of the solar sphere and into deep outer space where the musical past and future become entwined to create an exciting new chapter in the band's evolution.

GROZA (“storm”, “terror”) is a black metal band from Bavaria, Germany. Their sound is driven by emotion, anger and sadness, combining searing melodies, raging blast beats and melancholy induced clean guitar passages into a melodic, dynamic blend.
Founded as a one-man project by singer / multi-instrumentalist P.G. in 2016, the band gradually grew towards a full band in the following two years, culminating in the self-release of their first effort - “Unified In Void” (2018) - which almost instantly gained attention and interest, leading to the signing to AOP Records shortly after. After 3 years of writing and intense live activity followed the release of the 2nd full length album “The Redemptive End” (2021), that was met with critical acclaim and overwhelming reception of fans alike, entering #78 of the German album charts consequently.
Between releases, the band has extensively presented their craft live on stages all across Europe during various club shows, festivals and full-fledged tours across Europe. To date, GROZA has played 120+ shows in over 20 countries. Continuing to do so in the fall of 2024, the band will again tour Europe in support of the new album.

About the album
"Die Urkatastrophe" is a haunting exploration of the First World War's devastation, referred to as the primal catastrophe of the 20th century. The album is a poignant homage to the countless soldiers and civilians who perished in this brutal conflict. Using factual reports, letters, and original documents from both surviving and fallen soldiers, Kanonenfieber crafts a narrative that vividly portrays the harrowing personal experiences of war. Their black and death metal soundscape serves not only as entertainment but as an educational tool, challenging the glorification of war by illustrating its grim realities.
The album's recording at Kohlekeller Studio under Kristian Kohle’s expertise brings an authentic rawness to its sound. Featuring guest guitarist Maik Weichert from Heaven Shall Burn on "Waffenbrüder," the album blends historical authenticity with intense musical compositions. Kanonenfieber’s second album continues their mission to give voice to the silent stories of history, urging listeners to reflect on past horrors with compassion and understanding.

TRELLDOM are the brainchild of Kristian Eivind Espedal, who is better known under his artist's name Gaahl. The Norwegian became one of the leading figures of the Nordic black metal scene after joining the notorious Bergen outfit GORGOROTH in 1998. For many years, the vocalist was pigeonholed for his extreme vocals and attracted many, often dark rumours about his person. If any notion is true about Espedal, it is to always expect the unexpected. TRELLDOM have already written black metal history. The band founded by Gaahl in Sunnfjord, Vestland in 1992 released their debut album "Til evighet..." (1995) to great acclaim in underground black metal circles. Having changed the line-up to include guitarist Valgard and Stian "Sir" Kårstad on bass, TRELLDOM unleashed their sophomore full-length "Til et annet..." (1999) to already much attention of mainstream metal media. This album was produced by the legendary sound engineer Pytten at Grieghallen Studios in Bergen. Pytten also recorded the third milestone "Til minne..." (2007), which became highly regarded both by critics and fans. One of the key aspects of TRELLDOM's first trilogy has always been that in his own band Gaahl was free of the strict limitations under which GORGOROTH operated, and therefore able to explore his voice at will. With "...by the shadows..." the Norwegian artist breaks free from another mould. Returning after many years of dormancy, in which the musicians involved went on to work with several other projects, there is both continuity and change. The crucial collaboration with Stian Kårstad remains at the musical heart of the band. The by far the largest part of all songs on "...by the shadows..." has been created by Sir, who has also taken over all guitar duties. Yet Espedal has changed other aspects of TRELLDOM, which created fascinating effects. Now the renowned percussionist Kenneth Kapstad sits on the drum-stool,who was formerly of MOTORPSYCHO and is also driving the beats in SPIDERGAWD, MØSTER!, and THORNS. Kapstad also brought the internationally acclaimed jazz musician and saxophone player Kjetil Møster (MØSTER!, RÖYKSOPP, THE END) into the fold. The inclusion of Møster's unorthodox saxophone sounds can already be taken as an indication that TRELLDOM are no longer shackled by the narrowest definition of black metal. The music on "...by the shadows..." does remain dark and fierce. It is also clearly still growing out of its roots in the black past. Yet Espedal has willed his band into becoming a far more layered beast and set it free to roam in an avant-garde dimension – with the dissonant sound at times even turning towards the experimental. TRELLDOM have awakened from their slumber and "...by the shadows..." is a spirited manifesto for artistic freedom as well as a grand declaration of war against nostalgic stagnation. This album poses a challenge that states: love it or leave it!

ELEPHANT TREE present a remarkable Anniversary Edition of their acclaimed first album "Theia" (2015). While the music of this milestone remains untouched, its artwork has been given a refreshing inversion, and a wealth of rare photos, liner notes and lyrics have been added to provide a thorough look at the band's first decade since the original release. The seed for ELEPHANT TREE was planted in a rehearsal space somewhere in the smelly back alleys of England's sleepless capital of London in 2013. There, the first notes of what would become the song 'Attack of the Altaica' sprang from the bass of Jack Townley and Sam Hart's drums. Thus, it is fitting that this earliest demo became the opening track of the band's new rarities collection "Handful of Ten". The infectious blend of warm, syrupy fuzz and soaring vocal harmonies on the "Attack of the Altaica" demo soon led to contract and the debut full-length "Theia" was released in September 2014. Although the album received an excellent reception by critics and fans alike, the hardworking Englishmen did not rest on their laurels. In 2015 they followed up with the self-titled sophomore full-length "Elephant Tree". The next album took longer: ELEPHANT TREE's decision to try a label closer to home ultimately did not work out as the new label ran into trouble, which left the band's third and latest album "Habits" (2020) without the ongoing support it deserved. Looking back at ten most exciting years, ELEPHANT TREE celebrate this occasion with reissues of "Habits" and "Theia" as well as great tunes pulled from their archive alongside the brash and blistering new tracks under the title "Handful of Ten".

About the album
Agalloch's 'The Mantle' isn't just a great and influential album; it's a transformative journey, one that showed the band breaking away from their early direction in favor of its intricate blend of atmospheric metal mixed with an unheard amount of folk, and post-rock canvas. Originally released in 2002, and met with surprise and mixed emotions, it continues to captivate listeners with its atmospheric depth and emotional resonance decades later. One could say, there is no other album like this, none other whose artwork and imagery are so intertwined, every image resonates so well with the music, it feels almost impeccable, as if pictures could tell the songs by themselves.
The album allows the nostalgic warmth many crave, yet simultaneously creates a contemporary setting with cold and haunting silver imagery: nature's majestic realm meets post-modern bitterness. From the haunting melodies of "In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion" to the almost hypnotic rhythms of "I Am the Wooden Doors," the album's sonic palette is as diverse as the landscapes it evokes. Each track on "The Mantle" unfolds like a chapter in a dark, enchanting journey. Agalloch's signature blend of atmospheric (black) metal, deep folk instrumentation, and poetic lyricism creates a sense of introspection, an ethereal post-urban panorama. Ultimately, 'The Mantle' isn't just an album to be listened to; it's another experience to be felt. For fans of atmospheric & profound music, this album remains utterly relevant... and utterly essential.

"Boezem" ('Bosom'), the debut full-length of Dutch quintet VUUR & ZIJDE ("Fire & Silk") quite remarkably revolves around themes of conditional and unconditional love – and the difference between those, the liberation of intimacy, and motherhood. Obviously, this album politely abstains from going through the motions of tedious heavy metal clichés. Although the Dutch have deep roots in black metal and have been or still are members in such established bands as LASTER, NUSQUAMA, SILVER KNIFE, GREY AURA, WITTE WIEVEN, and TERZIJ DE HORDE, they have shifted stylistically away from their 2020 split-album with IMPAVIDA. Having grown from a trio to a 5-piece has brought a wider range of influences and ideas to the table. The changes are subtle but enough to locate a part of their sound in the evolving and exciting realms of post-black metal. The black side of the music is mainly expressed through whirling drum attacks and buzzing guitar riffs. Yet there is a second strong pillar on which "Boezem" rests, as bands that started out as post-punk acts and developed into more dreamy, meditative sounds such as COCTEAU TWINS and even DEAD CAN DANCE are also named as a source of inspiration. Synthesizer sounds and the beautiful voice of singer Famke naturally contribute to that side of VUUR & ZIJDE. The vocalist is also responsible for various lyrics penned in Frysk (Frisian). This language is still spoken in a few Dutch and German areas along the coast up to the Danish border. The other lyrics are written in Dutch. With "Boezem", VUUR & ZIJDE achieve a perfect balance between their contradictory poles. The aggressive side with elements of black metal that have been transformed into post-black metal contrasts with the light side of shoegaze, post-punk, and wave. Both are entwined in an endless dance that creates fascinating new music, which is at the same time beautiful and yet full of thorns – just like a black rose.

Some guys have all the luck. XASTHUR founder Scott Conner sure ain't one of them. The always open wound of his life suppurates in a constant flow of sonic blood into and out of his latest album "Disharmonic Variations". The thirteen bitter, painful, dirt-stained, and sometimes even hopeful tracks sure ain't pretty "Goldberg Variations" either. Rather the title "Disharmonic Variations" serves as both the program and the message. Music is not just what Scott does. He does not lead a picture book life. There is only music. Scott does not write and record just 8 songs a year. He makes music 24/7 on his own time and in his own way. Scott does it analogue, in the hard old-fashioned way, with his gear and instruments piled up in the room where he stays at the time. In this musical flow of consciousness, this diary of an artist, all considerations of style are a luxury that Scott does not have. His current form of expression on "Disharmonic Variations" tends towards the acidic taste of American dark folk with one detour into ambient sound. There is no guarantee for the direction that XASTHUR will take next. Whatever happens depends on what Scott feels. XASTHUR were originally conceived by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Scott Conner in the year 1995. Although started in the sunny state of California, USA, the project started out in the vein of bleak black metal of the Nordic second wave. In 2010, Scott announced the end of XASTHUR and returned with an acoustic dark folk project under the banner of NOCTURNAL POISONING. In 2015, the American artist circled back to the name XASTHUR, but insisted that his black metal days were over. On the previous release "Inevitably Dark" (2023), XASTHUR have partly lifted the self-imposed ban on black metal, simply because Conner felt like it and therefore did it. With "Disharmonic Variations", XASTHUR deliver their next 'take it or leave it' recording. To Scott Conner it does not matter what other people think about his music. Curse him, praise him – he still only does what he wills and that remains his true artistic achievement.

LIMBONIC ART are back! Their ninth full-length "Opus Daemoniacal" is black as a raven, fierce as a wolf, majestic as an eagle, and mighty as the legendary Norwegian black metal pioneers that mastermind, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Vidar "Daemon" Jensen founded in 1993 have always been. "Opus Daemoniacal" continues along the more straightforward black metal path that the Norwegian has chosen for his last releases yet this album also deliberately harks back to the dense atmospheric and cinematic feel of LIMBONIC ART's groundbreaking early works. After having turned into a duo, the debut album "Moon in the Scorpio" was released in 1996 via Nocturnal Art Productions – the label of EMPEROR guitarist Samoth aka Tomas Thormodsæter Haugen. Their at the time quite unique combination of harsh Nordic black metal with cinematic elements inspired by romantic and classic orchestral music proved extremely influential in the following years. With their sophomore full-length "In Abhorrence Dementia" (1997) and the third album "Epitome of Illusions" (1998) LIMBONIC ART gradually reduced the symphonic elements of their sound. In February 2003, the duo broke up, but Daemon reformed the band in 2006. He continued to release the LIMBONIC ART albums "Phantasmagoria" (2010) and "Spectre Abysm" (2017). "Opus Daemoniacal" connects the present to the early sound of the Norwegian cult act, which is bound to appeal to friends of their first albums as well as to a new generation of classic Norse black metal connoisseurs.
