Background information about 'Above, Below, & Through'
A season of change, hibernation and inspiration fueled Cloak in creating "Above, Below, & Through", the Atlanta quartet's first album for Metal Blade and their fourth overall. And you can hear that restless energy in every single second of it. The band themselves put it plainly: the record takes everything that was great about their last LP, "Black Flame Eternal", and amplifies it completely, while still standing firmly as an album of its own. That is a bold claim, but this thing delivers.
Thematically, the four-piece made a conscious decision to give the new record a fully realized conceptual vibe, with lyrics and themes circling around liminality and duality. Thresholds, in-between spaces, the tension between two worlds — it is a rich playground, and Cloak mine it with real intent rather than cheap atmosphere. Sonically, the album was tracked between January and April 2026, and it is their most lush and massive-sounding record to date. The drums are huge but never processed to death, the bass actually rumbles like it should, and the guitar tones are full of attack and focus. Listeners will notice a big difference between this production and the band's previous records — bigger, wider, more alive. Since forming in 2013, Cloak have been building toward something like this, and here it all clicks into place.
