Background information about 'Once Was Not'

Cryptopsy's brutal 2005 masterpiece "Once Was Not" stands as one of the most punishing and technically proficient death metal albums ever recorded. This Canadian extreme metal juggernaut delivered their most uncompromising work yet, featuring the devastating vocal assault of Lord Worm returning to the fold after his absence on "Whisper Supremacy". The album's eleven tracks showcase the band's signature blend of technical brutality and chaotic precision, with songs like "In The Kingdom Where Everything Dies, The Sky Is Mortal" and "The Frantic Pace Of Dying" demonstrating their ability to craft memorable hooks within seemingly impenetrable walls of sound.

What makes "Once Was Not" particularly special is how it balances Cryptopsy's trademark technical wizardry with genuine songwriting prowess. Tracks such as "Carrionshine" and "Keeping The Cadaver Dogs Busy" reveal layers of complexity that reward repeated listening, while the haunting closer "Endless Cemetery" provides a surprisingly atmospheric conclusion to this relentless sonic assault. The production captures every nuance of the band's performance, from the intricate bass work to the machine-gun precision of the drumming, creating an album that remains as fresh and devastating today as it was upon release.
