Somewhere between the fog-heavy forests of the old continent and the cold gleam of distant constellations, Gravenoire have carved out a debut that feels less like a record and more like a ritual. "Devant La Porte Des Etoiles" opens with the brief, unsettling "Pavens" before plunging headfirst into "France de l'Ombre" — a track that drags you through murky tremolo riffing and a rhythm section that never quite lets you find your footing. There is a distinctly French melancholy running through every bar here, a sense of grandeur that has rotted from the inside out, and it is absolutely intoxicating.
What sets this apart from the endless stream of black metal debuts is the songwriting discipline. "Ordo Opera Cultura" twists and turns without ever losing its thread, while "Aux Chiens" bites with a nastier, more punk-inflected energy. Then comes "Granit" — five-plus minutes of monolithic, granite-hewn riffing that earns its title, and the closing title track, which stretches out into something almost hypnotic before it collapses in on itself. The production is raw enough to keep the frost on the strings but clear enough that you can hear every spiteful nuance. This is black metal with a sense of place and a sense of dread, and it announces a band worth watching very, very closely.
