Background information about 'The World We Left Behind'

There are records that simply exist, and then there are records that feel like a door being kicked open into some other dimension. The World We Left Behind from Nachtmystium is very much the latter. Blake Judd and company have spent two decades dragging black metal through psychedelia, industrial grit, and pure rock'n'roll swagger, and on this one they sound like a band that has finally, completely let go of every rule they were ever handed. This is not polite black metal for the purists. This is music that snarls, soars, and occasionally just floats off into the void.

From the opening lurch of Intrusion you can feel the atmosphere thickening, all cold synths and creeping dread giving way to Fireheart and Voyager, where the riffs suddenly turn anthemic, almost triumphant. There is a strange warmth buried under all the darkness here, a kind of bruised, defiant beauty that surfaces in the slower passages and then gets ripped apart by blastbeats and howled despair. Into The Endless Abyss and In The Absence Of Existence are exactly as bleak as their titles promise, but the title track itself is a genuine centerpiece, a sprawling, hypnotic piece that feels less like a song and more like a slow-motion collapse.

By the time Tear You Down and On The Other Side hit, it is clear this band has no interest in being anyone's idea of "true" or "orthodox." The closer, Epitaph For A Dying Star, is pure atmosphere, a gorgeous, melancholy send-off that lingers long after the needle lifts. This is a record for people who like their extremity with a pulse, a sense of adventure, and zero fear of the strange.
