Background information about 'En Skog Av Nidstang'
Thirty-three years into a career that has never once bowed to trends, Taake returns with En Skog av Nidstang, the ninth full-length from the mind of Hoest. And honestly, it feels like the Norwegian underground's most stubborn voice has only sharpened with time. Cut off from the noise of the contemporary scene and increasingly isolated from outside influence, Hoest channeled that solitude into four sprawling, expansive compositions that pick up right where 2023's acclaimed Et Hav av Avstand left off.
Recorded south of Bergen, deep in the moss-covered forests around the island of Borgøy, the album breathes the landscape that once inspired the doomed painter Lars Hertervig. There is a raw, elemental quality to these recordings, built less on studio polish and more on intuition, patience, and a masterful command of the basics. Reckless thrashing riffs collide with brooding gloom, chilling melodies rise out of violent intensity, and moments of desolate reflection give way to untamed aggression. It sounds unmistakably like Taake, yet somehow more focused, more deliberate than ever before. En Skog av Nidstang is proof that an uncompromising artistic vision never goes out of style, it just gets sharper.
