Background information about 'War Master'
Bolt Thrower's sophomore effort "War Master" stands as one of the most devastating death metal albums ever unleashed upon mankind. Originally released in 1991 through Earache Records, this bone-crushing masterpiece showcases the band at their most refined yet brutal, combining the raw aggression of their debut with a more sophisticated approach to songwriting. The album's Warhammer 40,000-inspired themes of eternal warfare and apocalyptic destruction are delivered through some of the heaviest riffs ever committed to wax, with Karl Willetts' commanding vocals leading the charge over thunderous rhythms that feel like tank treads crushing everything in their path.
From the ominous "Intro...Unleashed (Upon Mankind)" to the epic closing statement of "Afterlife", every track on "War Master" delivers punishing death metal perfection. The production captures that perfect balance between clarity and crushing weight that made early 90s death metal so special. Songs like "What Dwells Within" and the title track showcase Bolt Thrower's ability to craft memorable hooks within their wall of devastation, while tracks like "Cenotaph" demonstrate their knack for building atmosphere through sheer sonic brutality.
