Background information about 'R.I.P.'
There are debut albums that merely introduce a band, and then there are records like "R.I.P." that arrive fully formed and rearrange the furniture of an entire genre. Coroner didn't stumble out of the gate in 1987 — they kicked the damn thing down. What the Züricher trio of Ron Royce, Tommy T. Baron and Marquis Marky laid down at Music Lab Berlin under the watchful eyes of Harris Johns is still, decades later, one of the most forward-thinking thrash records ever committed to tape. This is the sound of three musicians who refused to colour inside the lines, pushing themselves so hard they were practically falling off the edge of their own ability — and somehow turning that tension into pure magic.
What gets me every single time is how "Reborn Through Hate" still crackles with that same nervous electricity, Tom Gabriel Fischer's guest vocals slicing through like a blade. The instrumental passages aren't filler — they're flexes, moments where Tommy Vetterli lets those riffs breathe and wander into territory most thrash bands wouldn't dare tread. And "Spiral Dream" resurfacing from the Death Cult demo, now sung by Ron, feels like a band coming full circle and realising exactly who they were meant to be. Four instrumentals out of twelve tracks tells you everything: this wasn't a band short on lyrics, it was a band overflowing with ideas, showing off their practice-room obsession while the world tried to catch up.
It's no accident that "R.I.P." still gets cited as a cornerstone of progressive and technical thrash. The rhythm section of Royce and Marky locks into grooves that are equal parts precision and menace, while the guitar work points a clear finger toward everything that came after. This remaster, handled by Patrick W. Engel at Temple of Disharmony and cut by SST Germany on Neumann machines, finally gives this eternal classic the audiophile treatment it always deserved. If you think you know this record, think again — you've never heard it like this.
