Background information about 'At Work In The Fields Of The Bomb'
Deafheaven have always been a band that refuses to sit still, and "At Work In The Fields Of The Bomb" finds them pushing even further into the fog. The San Francisco outfit built their name on that glorious collision of black metal tremolo and shoegaze shimmer, and here they stretch those instincts into something wider, stranger and more patient. Guitars drift and then suddenly surge, drums tumble forward like weather rolling in off the coast, and the vocals sit somewhere between a scream and a confession. It is heavy music for people who also love the Cure, and it never once feels like a compromise.
What makes this record land is the sense of atmosphere. Deafheaven understand that a riff hits harder when it has room to breathe, and they use silence and space as deliberately as they use volume. Melodies emerge out of the murk and then dissolve again, and the whole thing plays like a walk through a landscape that keeps changing under your feet. There is melancholy here, sure, but also a stubborn kind of hope, the feeling of something beautiful growing out of rubble. It is the sound of a band still curious, still hungry, still willing to risk a few wrong turns in search of a moment that truly soars.
