Background information about 'Skald'
Wardruna's album "Skald" is a raw and intimate collection that takes the listener on a journey back to the roots of Nordic musical traditions. Einar Selvik captures the essence of ancient Norse poetry and melodies with a selection of acoustic tracks recorded live in studio. This album stands out in Wardruna's discography as it strips away the usual grand instrumentation, focusing instead on Selvik's voice and ancient instruments like the Kravik-lyre, Taglharpa, and Bukkehorn. The result is an immersive experience that pays homage to the Skald tradition, inviting listeners to connect with history through music.
"Skald" serves as an auditory portal to a time when oral storytelling was at the heart of culture. The simplicity and authenticity of each track create an evocative atmosphere that resonates deeply with those familiar with Wardruna's previous works. Yet, it also offers newcomers a unique entry point into the world of Norse-inspired music. Accompanied by an extensive booklet featuring lyrics and insights into Old Norse poetry, this album is both a cultural artifact and a testament to Einar Selvik's dedication to preserving ancient traditions through modern expressions.
