Background information about 'Satanic Royalty'
Satanic Royalty is the sound of a band that never asked for permission and never will. Midnight deal in a filthy, sleazy brand of blackened speed metal that smells like cheap beer, burnt rubber and a basement show that got way out of hand. Athenar and company rip through riffs like they are daring you to keep up, all raw production, sneering vocals and drumbeats that land somewhere between a Motörhead groove and a punk rock fistfight. It is ugly in the best possible way, and it knows it.
What makes this record such a joy is how completely unpretentious it is. There is no conceptual baggage, no prog excursions, no filler. Just one venomous, hooky anthem after another, built for leather jackets and blown speakers. The guitar tone is nasty, the choruses are shamelessly catchy, and the whole thing barrels forward with the kind of energy that most bands spend a career chasing. Whether you come to it as a longtime devotee of the Cleveland crew or you are just discovering them, this is the sound of heavy music having an absolute blast being bad for you.
For fans of: Venom, Motörhead, Bathory, Toxic Holocaust, Speedwolf
