Background information about 'Dema'
The iron curtain couldn't contain the darkness brewing in Czechoslovakia. Root's "Dema" stands as a monument to the raw, uncompromising spirit that birthed European black metal in the late 80s. This comprehensive collection captures the band's legendary first four demos, recorded between 1988 and the fall of communism – a time when playing rock music could literally land you in prison.
What makes this compilation absolutely essential is its documentation of Root's evolution from primitive thrash-influenced chaos to the distinctive sound that would influence countless bands. From the Czech-language incantations of Dr. Fe on the early recordings to Big Boss's commanding presence on "The Trial", you witness the birth of something genuinely unique. The eerie acoustic interludes, film samples, and that unmistakable lack of bass create an atmosphere that's both primitive and sophisticated – a paradox that only Root could master.
