About the album

With their seventh full-length "Nocturne", HEXVESSEL delve into the delicate balance between light and shadow through a stunning musical journey. The Finnish ensemble reclaims its roots in folk and psychedelic rock with an album that marries acoustic intermezzos with cosmic synths and spectral piano arrangements. The black metal undertones are woven subtly into their sound tapestry like threads of twilight across a frosted landscape. Originally conceived as a commissioned work for the Roadburn Festival 2024 under the title "Music for Gloaming: A Nocturne", this album emerges fully formed in recorded splendor. Drawing inspiration from black metal pioneer Quorthon and minimalist composers such as Philip Glass and György Ligeti, "Nocturne" stands as an ambitious blend of raw energy and intricate artistry. Guest appearances by Saara Nevalainen and avant-garde icons like Yusaf Vicotnik Parvez elevate its eclectic nature further.

HEXVESSEL, founded by English artist Kvohst (Mat McNerney) after relocating to Finland in 2009, have consistently reflected his diverse musical background—from UK black metal outfit CODE to projects like BEASTMILK (later GRAVE PLEASURES). With "Nocturne", they invite listeners to participate in an ethereal night ritual influenced by DARKTHRONE's primal spirit and TANGERINE DREAM's sonic exploration—resurrecting sounds from bygone eras infused with new life.
